  • Construction of the world’s largest onshore thin film LNG storage tank begins

On December 30,2025, the storage project of the Eastern Guangdong LNG Receiving Station operated by China National Pipeline Network Group officially commenced construction. The project will build the world’s largest onshore membrane-type LNG storage tank in terms of effective volume.

Located at the Yue Dong LNG Receiving Terminal in Jieyang City, Guangdong Province, this project represents a core expansion and upgrade initiative for the terminal. Utilizing internationally advanced thin-film storage tank technology, it features three newly constructed single tanks with a diameter of nearly 100 meters and an effective capacity of 240,000 cubic meters, filling the gap in large-scale thin-film LNG storage facilities in South China.

This project achieves multiple breakthroughs compared to traditional full-capacity tanks. Under the same footprint, it increases effective tank capacity by 10% while reducing costs by approximately 5%, with all core materials being domestically produced. This significantly enhances land resource utilization and economic efficiency. The storage tank can flexibly store various cryogenic media including LNG, liquid ammonia, ethane, ethylene, and LPG, enabling seamless integration with market demands across LNG, new energy, and chemical industries, while reserving space for future energy transition. The inner wall enclosure system reduces steel consumption by 90% compared to conventional tanks, cutting overall carbon emissions by over 25%. Its nitrogen-protected thermal insulation design ensures stable cryogenic performance and significantly improves operational reliability throughout the entire lifecycle.

As Guangdong’s first approved large-scale thin-film LNG storage tank project, this facility will add 470 million cubic meters of gas storage capacity upon completion. This expansion will boost the total storage capacity of the Eastern Guangdong LNG Receiving Station to 780 million cubic meters, with an annual processing capacity of 6 million tons. The project will significantly enhance the supply stability during peak gas demand periods in both winter and summer for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in December 2028. The National Pipeline Network Group will implement comprehensive quality and safety control throughout the entire process, driving improvements in quality and efficiency across all phases including design, procurement, construction, and trial operation.
